Since the 1960's the Voltolina brothers have been creating works of art from glass for their company Vittorio Voltolina. In 1988 they decided to expand their artwork to include the oldest tradition of Venice, the Murrina. The reinstatement of this historic procedure was a great success, and a few years later the company was renamed Antica Murrina Veneziana. The Murrina technique of glass making dates back to ancient Roman times but really flourished in the 18th century, when the designs became more elaborate and complicated. The murrina "millefiori", which means thousands of flowers, is made by melting together many thin canes of glass. These canes have been made by putting glass into a mould to take the form of a flower, star or other shape. It is then covered by more glass and may be put into another mould. The long canes of glass are cut into tiny pieces and put together to form a design. The design is then heated in the oven until it melts into one piece to create, the famous Murrina
